From the Chairman of the Department of Medicine

Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Newly graduated physicians entering all disciplines of internal medicine have a fabulous opportunity to bring science to medicine at a level of sophistication that is truly unprecedented. The University of California, San Diego Department of Medicine offers a Physician-Scientist Training Pathway that provides an unparalleled experience designed to train physicians to be bilingual, to speak the languages of clinical medicine and basic science. Our trainees bring clinical observations to the laboratory for in-depth study and translate basic mechanisms of human pathology into improvements in the diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

As a physician-scientist myself, I am excited about taking an active and personal role in your future academic success. You will find that my door is always open. I am thoroughly committed to ensuring that each PSTP trainee receives individualized mentorship and support. The UCSD Department of Medicine sees you as its life blood.

Residency training in internal medicine and its subspecialties is internationally recognized for its excellence. Our residents experience a diverse array of primary care and highly specialized cases in our hospitals, clinics, and with international opportunities. Science in the UCSD Department of Medicine and our partner institutions such as the Salk, Scripps and Burnham Institutes is simply outstanding.

Our physician-scientist faculty, known for their outstanding clinical skills and cutting edge research, welcomes the opportunity to mentor our next generation of physician-scientists. I can think of no better environment for a new physician devoted to crafting an independent academic career.

I hope you enjoy exploring the many opportunities in the UCSD Department of Medicine!

Sincerely,

Kenneth Kaushansky, M.D., M.A.C.P.
